1840 1d Intense Black: A SUPERB USED MARGINAL single in an INTENSE BLACK shade (a VERY EARLY print, but even so with a tiny spot of wear just above the 'L' square), with four LARGE-to-VAST margins, with MARGINAL INSCRIPTION '...the Address and tow...', on a clean but flimsy EMPTY ENVELOPE Blandford to Dulverton on 14 MAY 1840, a Thursday, and a RARE 'MAY DATE', a mere eight days after the first issue date. It is lightly cancelled and tied with a lovely neat BROWNISH-RED Maltese Cross. A neat 'No. 5' RECEIVING HOUSE on the fromt, and a LOVELY neat DATED 'BLANDFORD PENNY POST' on the obverse complete the picture of a remarkable cover. NW 5 and 10 o'clock Ray Flaws, and 'L'misplaced high left. Despite damage to the address panel, a SUPERB EXHIBITION PIECE. Cat.£3250+. | £1895.00 |
