SJ,TJ

1856 1d Brown-rose, a most INTERESTING TURNED LETTER, sent originally from the Standard Life Insurance Company in Edinburgh, to a local coach hirer, requesting a 'Private Friend's Report' (fascinating questions!), and pre-stamping the proforma return - the 1856 answer to the SAE. Both outgoing and incoming letters are stamped with examples of the VERY SCARCE PLATE 25 in an even SCARCER DEEP BROWN-ROSE shade (usually seen on much later plates). The outgoing letter was stamped with 'SJ' (unfortunately creased by the return folding), and the return with a FU single 'TJ', obviously from the same sheet. Both are off-centre low, but with FULL PERFS, sent out on 10 June 1856, cancelled with a part 'DUKE STREET' SCOTS LOCAL, with a FINE 'POSTED SINCE 7 LAST NIGHT' on the back, and returned the same day cancelled with an Edinburgh '131' numeral. 'SJ' shows the CONSTANT VARIETY: dot in 'S'. HIGHLY UNUSUAL, and a nice piece of social history... Cat.150++. 50.00

1857 1d Transitional Deep Rose-red on Unblued paper, a very interesting stamp, in a remarkable RICH DEEP ROSE-RED shade, on cover dated before 31 August 1857, and therefore printed at the SAVOY STREET premises. Whilst the shade makes it technically a C10(4), historically I believe this should be regarded as a C9 (see Plates 34 and 47 covers below, and also NOTES on the TRANSITIONALS page). This one is a FU+ single, centred slightly high left, with FULL PERFS, on neat empty envelope London to Bradford (Wilts) on 18 August 1857, cancelled with a London Inland '40' Numeral. Heavy blur along E frame-line. Cat.140+. New!
