1855 1d Brown-rose, a VFU single from this SCARCER plate, in a FINE SCARCE BROWN-ROSE shade, centred slightly high right, with FULL PERFS, on an INTERESTING empty mourning envelope, apparently posted originally in Cologne ('COELN'), Germany, on 17 September 1856, receiving a German type of circular date-stamp, addressed to Selkirk (Scotland). It arrived in Earlstone on 20 September 1856, where it was re-addressed and forwarded to Fraserburgh, Aberdeen, and where the stamp was applied over the German CDS, and lightly cancelled with an Earlstone '129' numeral. It then travelled via Melrose (20 September), arriving in Aberdeen on 21 September 1856. Various red transit marks were applied en route. 'K' misplaced high right. 'EE': W 'E' extend serif, and E 'E' misplaced right; 'EF': lower E frame-break (UNUSUAL on this plate). The date of this useage suggests an early C10 printing, probably from the final weeks of printing at Savoy Street. Cat.46+. New!
